Krups 203-42 Fast Touch Coffee Grinder, Black Review.

"Best & most efficient for the $$$!!!" 2001-05-22
By Chess Heart (Canton, OH)

There are two things I take very seriously in this life: one is books, the other is coffee (not surprisingly, the often go together). While the bulk of my reviews are children's books, I felt it necessary to go against type and review this coffee grinder. Most coffee experts as well as everyday, casual drinkers agree that the best tasting coffee is brewed with freshly ground beans. Once beans are ground, they begin to oxidize, much like an opened bottle of wine. Old preground coffee has a tendency to taste bitter, and with the proliferation of inexpensive grinders, more and more people are buying whole bean coffee to grind right before they brew. Of course, finding the RIGHT grinder for the price is the tough part. Grinders exist in every form and size and expense bracket. Quite a lot of round, domed grinders I've used have unsharpened blades on a mount that is too high to really grind beans fine enough for specialty coffee like espresso or Turkish. The Krups has a few advantages over other grinders, namely these: ** The blades are sharp and mounted low in the housing. Maybe other manufactures are saving a few pennies by putting flat tongues of metal in their grinders, but they don't have the edge to pulverize beans like the Krups can. ** The machine has a higher RPM than other machines. This makes it easier to reduce grind times and with additional speed, can reduce whole beans to powder in less than a minute (I've had a Black n' Decker that couldn't grind beans for Turkish coffee if you held the button for half an hour). ** the housing is oval and the lid is flat. I'm not an engineer or physicist, but I think the flat lid and oval shape allow the beans to fall back towards the blades for further grinding (again, my Black n' Decker allowed the beans to spin around the lid in a whirlpool pattern that was pretty to look at, but pointless for actually reducing the grounds to the small particles I wanted). ** it has a large capacity. Do you like strong coffee?? Use more grounds, then!! The box says that you can grind up to 20 cups of java at a time. I don't know about the sorts of demitasses they must be using to gauge the volume of a "cup", but I do know that this machine can grind up enough beans for a number of very stiff MUGS of coffee. In the disadvantages column, the only one I could site is that the housing cup is slanted down, I'm assuming for decorative purposes. Hence, I'm forever spilling beans out of the lower side. My new secret is to measure the beans out in the LID, first, then turn the whole thing upside down and put the housing into the lid. Since I only use it to grind coffee (and while I drink my fair share, I don't have the thing running nonstop day and night), I can't speak with any aplomb about how sturdy a machine is or how long it lasts. I once dropped one after a year and broke it, but it seemed nowhere near quitting, so I can't vouch for how long it would work under normal, non-butterfingered conditions. My assumption is that anything with such a high RPM rate isn't intended to be kept running for long periods of time-- creates too much heat and friction-- so if you plan to grind coffee night and day, it's probably best that you spend the money on a professional model intended for cafes. All in all, a fine piece of workmanship and definitely worth the extra few dollars over many of the other, cheaper, more poorly-designed grinders on the market today.

 "A fine grinder" 2001-12-05
By J. Rabideau (Stuck in the Loser State)

...this guy is. It grinds coffee. What more is there to possibly say about it? It does what it's supposed to do, uniformly, and well. The end result is consistent, providing I count off a consistent time (the same could not be said for the previous beast that dwelled in my kitchen). It's a good grinder---I use it fairly heavily: grinding about a half-pound every six or eight days (what can I say? I'm a student. Caffeine is my lifeblood.). I have had my unit for over a year, and it has neither developed irritating quirks nor broken and needed replacing: the blades have also remained sharp.

The single word of advice that I would attach to this would be that you might wish a good, fairly long-handled and firm-bristled brush to clean it with: the shape of the lid and of the unit's base is such that grounds seem to adhere to the crevices. This is nothing that a washing of the lid can't address, but dunking the base in the sink has always seemed, well...inadvisable? It's a dependable machine: worth the money.

 "For serious coffee drinkers" 2001-06-16
By MotherLodeBeth (Sierras of California)

We are serious cooks and take our coffee seriously. Own two of these and the first one is at least ten years old and the newest one less than two. Grinds whole beans according to your desired taste. We own two simply because we like plain as well as flavoured whole bean coffee and simply wish to keep the flavors separate.

Two helpful hints someone suggested that I pass on. Place this grinder on a small towel or pot holder as it helps muffle the sound. Secondly, invest in a good quality nylon paint brush that you can use to "sweep" out your coffee grinder weekly so that you have no grounds left as these can turn rancid over months and leave an awful taste.

Oh and if this or any appliance breaks down contact the maker not Amazon.com and they will replace it. Krups is a reliable maker and I know firsthand that they stand by their products.

I've had the same Krups grinder for well over ten years (if it's not this exact model, it sure looks just like it). It's easy to use, grinds fast and evenly, and cleans up with a wet paper towel. I don't know if it'll *ever* burn out, but when it does, rest assured I'll get another Krups.

 "Better than the Braun" 2006-08-26
By Nicholas Sterling (Austin, TX USA)

A little over 6 months ago we read about the benefits of grinding flaxseed and eating it with cereal, and decided to try it. So we bought the Braun KSM-2 grinder for the purpose, and it worked reasonably well.

However, while staying at a friend's house we tried the same thing with a Krups grinder, and found that

1. it ground the flaxseeds more thoroughly (we think it is because of the oval shape), and

2. it was quieter

We like the Braun's space for winding up the cord, and the Braun seems sturdy enough, so it's not a bad unit. But we bought the Krups and have been using it for a few weeks now, and we prefer it.

Our theory is that the key to the Krups's better grinding is the shape -- seen from above it is an oval with one end chopped off. This shape appears to stop the forward momentum of the flaxseeds (or whatever) so that the blades hit them with more impact. That is, in a circular grinder the seeds tend to pick up speed and swirl around with the blades, but the shape of the Krups doesn't let the speed build up so much.

Cuisinart DCC-1200 12-Cup Brew Central Coffeemaker, Black and Stainless Steel Review.

 "Finally Found It!" 2002-03-17
By

After purchasing 3 other coffee makers, the 4th one is the charm! This coffee maker makes great tasting coffee. I never knew there was a difference -- it's worth spending a few more dollars on. It also has all of the features I was looking for such as: adjustable warming plate, 1-4 cup selection, water filter, programmable. It is a rather tall machine, but certainly not a problem as it fits fine underneathe most cabinets. Als, the carafe is well-made and has a spout that pours nicely without spilling. No complaints about this one!

"Cuisinart DCC-1200 easily trumps Krups 180-46 Aroma Control" 2001-12-01
By Pawel Fludzinski (Zionsville, IN United States)

Two weeks ago, I needed a new coffee maker. The Krups Aroma Control maker is in all the stores and catalogs, so I bought one in the local mall BEFORE reading the Amazon reviews. BIG MISTAKE. Lesson learned - read the reviews - many negative comments. I used it for 3 days, and readily understood the description (...) of "eye candy" (looks nice, but seems like cheap plastic) and weak coffee (what they describe as a feature - allowing the coffee to steep - is really a euphemism for a poorly designed system that is guaranteed to give you a weak cup of coffee). One redeeming feature - the carafe is very nice.
Within 2 days of having the Krups, i was on Amazon looking for a replacement coffee maker (a good cup of coffee is critical in the morning!). I went out on the risk curve and ordered the new Cuisinart - no reviews yet. The Cuisinart has a more classic brewing system (water goes through grinds via gravity), yields a delicious cup of HOT coffee, has a variable temperature hot place, and looks and feels solid. We happen to have stainless steel appliances (refrigerator, freezer, stove), and it matches beautifully. Best news - excellent coffee!. I would highly recommend the Cuisinart.

 "Plusses and Minuses" 2005-07-18
By Elaine Corwin (Concord, PA United States)

I've had the Cuisinart DCC-1200 for about a week now. I was hesitant to spend so much on a coffee maker but I'm happy to report it's well worth it. Sure, you can get other brands of coffee makers for under $25 if economy is the most important feature, but I've had those machines and I decided that, this time, a good cup of coffee was most important for me. This unit makes the best coffee I've had in a home or office machine and better than most coffee I've had in restaurants.

This coffee tastes smooooooth! I suspect the charcoal water filter is the reason for that. I also like the "shower head" design of the water spout. The water actually runs up a track onto the underside of the lid and is sprinkled over the ground coffee like a rain shower.

It's an attractive unit but it also looks like a serious coffee maker. This unit is no toy. It looks and feels solid. The carafe has a good solid feel and balance. The plastic parts (like the plastic carafe lid and handle) feel like good heavyweight plastic and are well molded. It's not the lightweight crappy plastic that cracks and discolors easily in the cheap coffee makers.

I like the 5 beeps when the coffee is ready. Now I can leave the kitchen and go clean or whatever and I don't have to keep running back to see if I can get a cup yet. I can hear the beeps. But if I really can't wait and want a cup in mid-brew, I can just remove the pot and pour a cup - you've got a full 30 seconds to reinsert the pot, before you risk an overflowing filter.

I like the permanent gold-tone filter too. I always thought paper filters were a pain. They'd fold over sometimes and there'd be grounds in my coffee. But you can use paper filters in this machine if you want to. I just prefer the convenience of the gold-tone filter (top rack machine washable too).

It has an indicator light for cleaning -- it says it's "self-cleaning" but really it's just a light telling you when you need to pour in a pot of water/vinegar and run it through to decalcify the unit. (I never thought to do that with my other units. Probably another reason my coffee wasn't as good as I wanted it to be.)

The low-medium-high setting on the hot plate is pretty nice too. And the auto-shutoff feature is great. I don't have to worry about forgetting to turn the machine off.

The instruction booklet is very good and very thorough. Comes with a parts reordering form too.

What don't I like about this machine? It requires maintenance in that you have to change the charcoal filters. But actually I don't mind since I think they are the reason the coffee tastes so smooth, and they are very easy to change and not expensive [...]

Also, the area in the top of the machine where you pour in the water is narrow but again this is just a minor inconvenience. Just have to pour a little carefully.

So really it's almost all positives with a couple of very minor negatives. I highly recommend this coffee maker.

"Read This One! The problems are fixed on the current models." 2002-11-22
By BEN (CHARLOTTE, NC United States)

Folks, this is one excellent coffee maker. I read the comments here and decided to get it even though some had complained of spillage when lifting the lid and also the coffee not being hot enough. Well I can tell you that when I lift the lid on mine, the water rolls to the back and then drips back into the machine on a nifty little lip attached to the back of the machine. It appears that Cuisinart has engineered a solution for the complaints of spilled water that some reviewers mention. Also, the coffee coming out of the carafe of my machine has steam drifting off of it, so it is plenty hot, another complaint that seems to have been remedied. There were also a couple of complaints about finger prints on the stainless and the small LED clock being hard to read, but let's be for real, all brushed stainless appliances will fingerprint and this is a very stylish coffee maker, not a kitchen clock(that's what your microwave is for! (wink)). Actually I think the Cuisinart guys intended the clock for autoprogramming functions and made it LED to match the stainless on the machine. And if you don't like the water filter, you don't have to use it. It is a nicety and can be readily found if you search the net for "dcc1200 water filter".
Enough defending complaints though. This machine makes superb coffee. It has the best carafe I have ever used(it will not spill a drop and it has a built-in plastic rim to keep you from busting it on the sink). It comes with a gold metal filter. Buy it and you will like it. And if for some strange reason you don't, then take it back. All jabs aside, this is an outstanding machine in form as well as function, and the people at Cuisinart obviously care what their customers think of their products. That means alot to me. How about you???

"Best Coffeemaker that I have ever owned..Hands Down" 2003-09-03
By

The Cuisinart DCC 1200 Brew Central Coffeemaker is the best coffeemaker that I have ever owned. I have been using it for the last several months and have not regreted making this purchase. I looked at other manufacturers of coffeemakers, Braun, Krups, and the like, but I felt that they didn't offer what this coffeemaker has to offer. I love the retro style with the stainless steel look. It's a breeze to program and if you don't need 12 cups a coffee, you press one button on the front and you can make a great small pot of coffee. It by far makes the best pot of coffee that I have ever tasted, and since I roast my own coffee at home I should know.

There are a couple of minor issues, but they are so minor it isn't a large drawback to the machine. It can be a chore to pour in the water and with it large size, with top lid open, you have to pull it out from under the upper kitchen cabinets to fill. It's a minor inconvenience, but when you use it daily you slowly find little tricks that make those minor issues seem to disappear. Others have complained about not seeing the clock very well, but why depend on your coffeemaker to tell time when it is really there to be programmed to wake up to a hot pot of delicious coffee. The condensation issue hasn't been a problem for me, so I can't comment on that issue that some have had with this coffeemaker.

I will say that if you are looking for a great coffemaker, then this is the one for you. It's a bit more money than most coffeemakers, but I think that for the money this coffeemaker is the best bang for the buck and you will never regret owning one.

Black & Decker TRO480BS Toast-R-Oven 4-Slice Toaster Oven

Black & Decker TRO480BS Toast-R-Oven 4-Slice Toaster Oven Review.

 "Great Toaster-Oven" 2009-11-02
By waggie (Carlsbad, CA)

I rate this toaster oven 5 stars, not because it is the biggest, best toaster oven out there, but because for the PRICE, it's a great mid-size countertop oven, it's very attractive, it has good basic features with easy dials, and toasts evenly and has a good size interior. Amazon ought to carry this themselves and offer free shipping. I actually got mine from a department store this week for a cheaper price (loss leader probably).

That other post with 1 star was kind of bizarre, getting the wrong rack?? Maybe he got a return or something but these come very well packed. A few features I like about this one is the wire shelf is reversible, no surprise there, but turned one way, it has a wire lip that the enclosed tray can slide under attached, which helps during the baking process to catch any overflow drips. Then your baking pan can sit right on top of the rail. I also like the pull out crumb tray from the front, easy to clean and put al. foil. The sides have little hooks that the wire rack can slide into and it pulls out the rack a slight bit when you open the oven, makes it easy to grab your toast. The front handle is screwed in, all very secure. The cord is shorter than most, but I consider this a plus. Most people place the oven right by a plug anyway and too long of a cord gets in the way. It's long enough to pull the oven out to the front of the counter tho if you are cleaning behind, etc.

Black & Decker made a good one with this model.

"Great for what I need" 2009-11-10
By Tanya R. Golding (Sierras, Ca USA)

My toaster broke after seven years and I wanted a unit that would toast and broil. Didn't need a convection oven. I found this unit and was very happy about the price. It is quite attractive and matches my stainless and black kitchen. The first thing I did after cleaning the unit was make toast. I wanted to see how evenly it toasted. I must say I was quite surprised at how quickly and evenly it toasted. So I'm already a happy camper. The door has a nice size handle. The unit does get hot, but from what I read most toaster ovens do. Will write another review after I've had this for awhile.

Update-2/10/10 I have had this toaster over for awhile now and I am very happy with it! It still toast bagels & bread very evenly. I have put 4 slices of Orowheat bread in it and it still toasted it evenly. It doesn't take as long as my regular toaster did. So I am still a happy camper. The best part is it is not very expensive! Wow to get what you want and not have to pay a high price! Woohoo!!

"Best bang for the buck, toasts & bakes great! Great features!" 2009-12-06
By Sara Singer (NJ)

This toaster is five star to me because you can't beat the price and the performance. I am not comparing it to the expensive convection ovens. For an very inexpensive toaster oven you just can't beat the features, the price and the performance. It toasts evenly. It bakes evenly. I tried to bake some Pillsbury Crescent rolls and it did a better job than my regular oven. It has a wonderful timer feature that you can set up to 20 minutes. You can also opt to leave it on in the stay on mode. There are toaster settings. Best to watch the item you are toasting the first few times and know the time for your specific bread. It holds three large bakery style loaf bread slices. It does so much more quickly than the last Black and Decker model I had. The pull our crumb tray feature is a real time saver. Whether I need to cook fish, meat, or heat a hot sandwich, toast, or reheat...I find it incredibly wonderful for the price. THere are small saftey protusions in the back of unit so you keep it the proper distance from any touching surface. What more can I say? If you want a toaster over that is not reinventing the wheel then this is the model!! How can you beat $26.99?! Besides all this it does look nice. It is compact at just 9" deep x 16" long x 8.5" tall. Amazon had the wrong size listed on their site. I bought it from SEARS because they had a much better price.

 "Great Toaster Oven!" 2010-01-27
By Joanne M. (N.Y.)

I really like this Toaster Oven. I had a Black & Decker toaster oven for many years and was happy until one of the elements blew out. Then I started using a new Oster that I had received as a gift. It lasted about one year. At first I was not going to purchase this one because it seemed TOO Large as per the measurements given in the item description which turned out to be wrong (12-2/5 by 18-8/9 by 15 inches ). The actual measurements of this oven are 15 3/4" wide, 8" high, and 9" deep (at the widest part on the bottom). The item description size was way off and it seemed like it was going to be a monstrosity on the counter. It turns out it is just an average size oven. It works great. Toasts and broils VERY fast and the timer is quiet. Looks stylish too. What more do you want from a toaster oven? The only two issues are that the power cord is shorter than expected. It just about reaches the outlet where it is placed, and there are only two heating elements. But it works very well. I really like the slide out crumb catcher. Very easy to clean. You don't have to lift the oven up and open the bottom to clean it like most toaster ovens.

 "Perfect for me." 2010-01-27
By C B-True

I was looking to replace an old GE Toast-R-Oven. I found this after a lot of searching and it is absolutely perfect. It's not a lot bigger than my old toast-r-oven which was important to me since I have limited counter space, yet it will toast four pieces of bread at a time. It's even easier to clean than my old toast-r-oven because the crumb tray pulls out the front. Some people may not like the "turn past 10 then turn back to the desired doneness" aspect of the toasting function, but I don't mind and my toast is terrific. Considering what they want for toast-r-ovens these days this was a steal and it's nice looking too!

Rubbermaid Easy Find Lid 24-Piece Food Storage Container Set

Rubbermaid Easy Find Lid 24-Piece Food Storage Container Set Review.

"Containers are great - here's how to choose the right set" 2010-02-20
By Buying Happiness

I am very happy with the Easy Find Lid series. They are very good quality. But then, the many, many other reviewers who all also love this set will tell you that.

So here's some information that is harder to find: all the sets of these that I could find available, and the contents of each set, all in one place.

----------

50 piece set (25 containers, 25 lids):

6 x 0.5 cups (118 mL)

6 x 1.25 cups (296 mL)

3 x 2 cups (473 mL)

3 x 3 cups (710 mL)

3 x 5 cups (1.2 Liter)

2 x 7 cups (1.7 Liter)

2 x Divided 4.8 cups (1.4 Liter)

----------

48 piece set (24 containers, 24 lids):

6 x 0.5 cups (118 mL)

5 x 1.25 cups (296 mL)

2 x 2 cups (473 mL)

3 x 3 cups (710 mL)

4 x 5 cups (1.2 Liter)

3 x 7 cups (1.7 Liter)

1 x 14 cup (3.3 Liter)

----------

40 piece set (20 containers, 20 lids - walmart only?)

5 x 0.5 cups (118 mL)

5 x 1.25 cups (296 mL)

4 x 2 cups (473 mL)

2 x 3 cups (710 mL)

2 x 5 cups (1.2 Liter)

2 x 7 cups (1.7 Liter)

----------

36 piece set (18 containers, 18 lids):

4 x 0.5 cup (118 mL)

4 x 1.25 cup (296 mL)

5 x 2 cup (473 mL)

4 x 3 cup (710 mL)

3 x 5 cups (1.2 Liter)

2 x 7 cups (1.7 Liter)

----------

24 piece set (12 containers, 12 lids):

2 x 0.5 cups (118 mL)

2 x 1.25 cups (296 mL)

2 x 2 cups (473 mL)

2 x 3 cups (710 mL)

2 x 5 cups (1.2 Liter)

2 x 7 cups (1.7 Liter)

----------

18 piece set (9 contains, 9 lids):

3 x 0.5 cups (118 mL)

2 x 1.25 cups (296 mL)

1 x 2 cups (473 mL)

2 x 3 cups (710 mL)

1 x 5 cups (1.2 Liter)

----------

One more note - I found that buying two of the 24 piece sets was several dollars cheaper than buying either the 50 or 48 piece sets, and would provide a nicer distribution that would fit my needs better. Prices will change, of course, so this may not always be true, but it was for me.

Here's some comparison data for buying a 50 piece set, a 48 piece set, 2x24 piece set, and 3x24 piece set, all of which are in a similar price range:

1x50 piece set: 6x0.5, 6x1.25, 3x2, 3x3, 3x5, 2x7, 2x4.8divided

1x48 piece set: 6x0.5, 5x1.25, 2x2, 3x3, 4x5, 3x7, 1x14

2x24 piece set: 4x0.5, 4x1.25, 4x2, 4x3, 4x5, 4x7

3x24 piece set: 6x0.5, 6x1.25, 6x2, 6x3, 6x5, 6x7

 "Great containers!" 2008-05-27
By G. Paterson (New York)

I love this set of storage dishes. They do not take up much room in my limited cabinet space, since they all fit inside each other, and I LOVE the fact the lids lock together, so no more lids all over the place. I saw on another review that she had problems with tomato sauce staining the bowls. The way to stop that from happening is to spray a little non stick cooking spray into the bowl before you add the tomato based product. Viola! No more stains! I highly recommend this set!

I love this stuff - seems more sturdy than generic brands, and the stackable lids fit both deep and shallow tubs.

Great product, holds up very well in the microwave and dishwasher. Doesn't stain, even when I put staining spices like curry and cumin based foods in them. Would recommend these to everyone.

I found these containers to be a great help to me in the kitchen. I never have to hunt down the covers and they are a great space saver. Now I have containers of various sizes to fit my needs. I'm happy I purchased these.

Cuisinart ICE-20 Automatic 1-1/2-Quart Ice-Cream Maker, White Review.

 "GREAT ICE CREAM MAKER!!" 2002-02-22
By

I bought this ice cream maker after seeing one like it on the food channel. I have one of those Rival brand ice cream makers that requires the salt and ice. What a mess! and loud!! This Cuisinart ice cream maker is wonderful! It is quiet compared to my old Rival and very easy to use. You keep the bowl in the freezer at all times, and when you make up a batch of ice cream, you just pour the cream in the frozen bowl and turn the button to ON. In 20 minutes or less, you have ice cream. I am very glad I bought this. I also purchased Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream & Dessert book and a Farberware Millennium ice cream scoop along with this maker and I would highly recommend those also!

"Read This if yours only makes ice cream "soup"" 2007-11-08
By webgrunt (USA)

The first several times I used this product, it didn't seem to work--the ice cream never really froze, it just turned into a very cold soupy sludge. I had checked all the obvious things--made sure the bowl was completely frozen, made sure my ingredients were well-chilled, didn't overload it and let it run the recommended amount of time. I was going to return it, but thanks to all the positive reviews here, I thought maybe there was something I was doing wrong.

There was.

For flavoring, I was always using a certain artificial vanilla flavor that I like. And because I like it, I use a lot of it. One of the main ingredients of this flavoring is propylene glycol. If any of you who read this are chemistry buffs, I'll bet you're laughing now. Propylene glycol is often used in food flavorings and colorings, but also is used as antifreeze when a non-toxic antifreeze is required. So I was pouring in a good deal of edible antifreeze with my ingredients--next time I'll just use chocolate or something!

So, if you're having trouble getting your ice cream to freeze and you've checked everything else, make sure your flavorings don't contain propylene glycol!!

 "Excellent Ice Cream" 2000-05-05
By John Stevens (Columbus, GA)

So far, my wife and I have made a batch of mint chocolate chip, and cookies and cream. Both were excellent! We made these using the "simple" recipe (no eggs or cooking required). These recipes taste like Breyer's (which is an A+ rating by our standards). Not a surprise, because if you examine a carton of Breyer's, you'll see the same simple ingredients (cream, milk, sugar, real vanilla or mint extract) -- no "xantham gum" or what-not. I disagree with the other review here that says the ice cream doesn't freeze well (after making) -- in fact, we think the texture is better after it firms up a bit. We compared this product to a similar one by Krups, but the Cuisinart has a more powerful motor and a better warranty. We are looking forward to trying frozen daquiris, slushies, and other ice cream flavors. This is a great machine!

"Easy to use and makes GREAT product!" 2002-02-07
By B. Pfahnl (Southern NH, USA)

I asked my husband to buy this machine for me for Christmas instead of jewelry, and have no regrets! I love all the sorbets, ice milks and ice creams that we can make. It is simple to use, and the results taste great!

My only complaint is how loud the machine is. I can't really let the machine run while we are having dinner unless I put the ice cream maker far away from the kitchen and dining room. But other than that inconvenience, I can't complain.

I would agree with the other reviewers -- use cold ingredients, and start your ice cream as soon as you take the bowl out of the freezer. I let my bowl freeze for at least two days before using it. I put it in a plastic bag, and then put a zip-loc bag of ice in the container just to be sure.

I have a hard time using all of the egg yolks and heavy cream to make true "ice cream" (although a splurge once in awhile isn't a bad thing!). I try to stick to the lower fat recipes. You can find endless recipes and ideas on the internet. I must admit that when in a hurry I just throw together some milk, half and half, real mexican vanilla, sugar, and a pinch of salt (no recipe here, just taste it to your own creaminess and sweetness level) to make ice cream for dessert. It's like having fresh soft serve. Yum!

If you would like your own ice cream maker, you can't go wrong with this machine!

When buying the Cuisinart ice cream maker, I really wasn't sure I'd use it, as I rarely eat ice creams. The power to create is a heady experience, though, and the effortlessness with which wonderful concoctions can be made using this machine ensures it will not become one of those useless appliances collecting dust on a shelf somewhere.

This is a great purchase even for those who assume they can't eat ice cream! Since you control the ingredients, you can create recipes working around any sort of diet -- allergy, diabetic, lactose intolerant, vegan, whatever! The machine also works equally well for sherberts and frozen drinks. It's extremely easy to use and cleans very easily.

Few notes for better results:

1) The bowl must be *frozen*. I recommend at least 2 days in the freezer between uses (you may want a second bowl).

2) Upon removing the bowl from the freezer, add ingredients and use -- it will start to thaw immediately. A friend noted that covering the top of the unit while mixing causes it to retain its "cool" longer (a plate over the opening works well).

3) The ingredients must be very cold. If cooking ingredients (such as for fruit or egg enhanced recipes), it's absolutely necessary to chill the resulting mixture before adding it to the unit.

4) Choice in ingredients can make or break your ice cream. While milk can be used, cream results in a much richer, thicker, tastier ice cream. Also, make sure you've crushed or finely chopped any solid ingredients before adding, as otherwise, they will clog in the mechanism; they should also be added during the last 5 minutes only or will impede freezing (same goes for alcohol). Thorough mixing of ingredients is important, as well, since the machine does not churn the mixture (sugar especially needs to be well dissolved or will result in uneven flavoring).

5) Regardless of what you do, you will produce very soft ice cream. Pouring the result into a freezer-proof container and freezing for a few hours to one day works very well.

I know that sounds like a lot of hassles, but it's really not.
The preparation of ingredients can range from moments to hours, as your options are quite limitless.

It makes 1.5 quarts of ice cream, which is not a limitation (should you feel you will consistently need more servings, invest in additional bowls). It stores very well, lasting for a couple of weeks without crystalizing. I would use mine every day if I could remember to buy cream!
